A disturbing video has surfaced showing a group of Indigenous men in the Northern Territory laughing while attacking a kangaroo.

Footage shows the kangaroo being kicked in the head, a rock thrown at it and its tail being stepped on, before one of the men picked the animal up and slammed its head into a Nissan Patrols tow ball.

In the video, uploaded to the men’s Instagram handle @crossthecreekboys in May, laughter can be heard as the kangaroo is attacked.

Kangaroos and all native animals are protected in the NT, unless a permit to cull is issued.

A person who commits an animal cruelty offence in the NT may be fined or imprisoned for two years.

Animal abuse includes beating, abusing, torturing, injuring or wounding an animal.

The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries Animal Welfare branch is investigating this matter.
