An investigation is underway after two New South Wales Police dogs were found dead in their handler’s vehicle.

Police dog Xtra, a seasoned German Shepherd, and development dog Soldier had accompanied their handler to a command development day on Thursday.

Both dogs were placed in the air-conditioned pods in a facility at Lucas Heights in the handler’s purpose-built police vehicle.

However, at around 12.30pm, during a routine check, the handler discovered both dogs had died. Attempts to revive them at a specialist veterinary clinic were unsuccessful.

Sutherland police area command and fleet services have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Commissioner Karen Webb expressed condolences, emphasising the loss felt by the force.

“Today is a very sad day for the dog unit, and the thoughts of the whole police family are with them,” she said, vowing a thorough investigation in honour of both dogs.

Assistant Commissioner Stephen Hegarty of the police transport and public safety command noted the emotional impact on the department, with support services being offered to all affected staff.
