A police manhunt is underway for the ex-partner of a woman repeatedly stabbed in a horror attack outside a Sydney gym on Wednesday.

A man allegedly waited in a car for his former girlfriend outside Crunch Fitness in Alexandria before stabbing her with a kitchen knife in what police believe was a targeted attack.

Police are searching for the 40-year-old who has previous convictions for domestic violence, after the 39-year-old woman was hospitalised with injuries to her upper body, neck and ear.

The assailant, who was wearing a grey jacket, black pants and white sneakers, allegedly grabbed his ex-girlfriend as she was leaving the O’Riordan Street gym about 12.30pm on Wednesday.

Police say he threw the woman to the ground before he began stabbing her with a knife. The woman then ran inside the gym, blood gushing from her neck.

The man then fled the scene in a grey Ford Focus hatchback with the registration AYQ14W.

South Sydney Police Area Command Detective Superintendent Rodney Hart said police had interviewed the woman in hospital and said she had been in a brief relationship with the man earlier this year.

“I want to assure the community that this is a targeted attack,” he said.

“It’s horrendous what has happened to this poor victim. What I want is this offender, because we are going to find him and arrest him, I want him to go to the local police station and hand himself in.”

Mr Hart described the offender as between 170-175cm in height and of muscular and solid build with an olive caucasian complexion and dark hair and beard.

Mr Hart said police were analysing CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses.

“If this person that we believe is the offender is the person who has committed the offense then yes he is known to the New South Wales for domestic violence in the past,” he said.

The Crunch Fitness gym remained open on Thursday. Just after 4pm three men in tank tops and shorts entered the gym, seemingly unconcerned by the stabbing that took place just hours earlier.

Mr Hart said police were looking to speak to witnesses who helped the woman in the aftermath of the attack.

The woman is in a stable condition in hospital, which police have requested media do not disclose.
