Police believe they have found the body of a Lake Macquarie woman reported missing in bushland earlier this week, bringing a large search operation to locate her to a tragic close.

On Wednesday, officers commenced inquiries into the whereabouts of a 63-year-old woman on Wednesday after she was reported missing from the Lake Macquarie area.

At about 12pm on Friday, the body of a woman was located near a waterway at Glenrock nature reserve at Kahibah, about 9km southwest of Newcastle.

While the body is yet to be formally identified, police believe it is that of the missing woman.

A mulit-agency search party — including the NSW State Emergency Service, Rural Fire Service and National Parks and Wildlife crews, and police — scoured bushland in the Glenrock State Conservation Area all day and late into Thursday night in a bid to find the 63-year-old who had been missing since lunchtime the day before.

Lake Macquarie Inspector Anita Kruse told media on Thursday morning that the woman had sent her partner a message to say she would be going for a walk at Glenrock but never returned.

Inspector Kruse said police discovered the woman’s vehicle parked with her phone inside in a carpark off Burwood Road.

She said the woman suffered a medical condition which needed attention.

Crews battled “difficult” weather conditions as they continued the overnight search on Wednesday and into Thursday morning.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
