In the process, Alahmed was shot twice by the second gunman who was positioned on a nearby bridge.

It’s believed he suffered bullet wounds to his shoulder and hand and will undergo surgery on Sunday night.

Ahmed’s cousin Mustafa spoke to 7NEWS outside hospital, confirming Ahmed had no experience with guns and simply just decided to step in in a bid to help the situation.

“He’s in hospital and we don’t know exactly what’s going on inside,” Mustafa said.

“We do hope he will be fine. He’s a hero 100 per cent.”

Ahmed became an instant hero after incredible footage taken at the scene showed him creeping around a car before tackling the shooter from behind.

Ahmed can then be seen wrestling the gun from the shooter and pointing the rifle at the gunman as he backs away.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said there is “no doubt there are many, many people alive tonight as a result of his bravery”.
