In a statement on Instagram, Lifeblood said they have “transferred blood from multiple states to support the need in Sydney.”

Hundreds of Sydneysiders have shown up to donate at Lifeblood Town Hall with queues stretching outside the building.

What type of blood is needed?

Lifeblood urges O blood type individuals in particular to donate after they received several life-threatening orders for O negative blood.

O negative blood is vital in emergency situations because it can be given to patients of any other blood type.

“Fewer than seven per cent of the population are O negative, making it a challenge,” a Lifeblood spokesperson said.

How can I donate?

Australians in any State are being urged to walk-in to donate blood.

The Lifeblood website is currently experiences issues due to the high numbers of traffic, but bookings can still be made here.

Lifeblood Sydney Town Hall are currently taking walk-ins but urge people to try call and make an appointment.

In emergency situations, up to 100 blood donations may be needed to save just one life.

Lifeblood donor engagement and experience chief executive Cath Stone says, “even if you’re donating in Western Australia, chances are it is going to be moved to another part of the country for use where it’s most needed,

“This is a job that any part of Australia can do, where we have a centre.”

NSW Premier Chris Minns says, “if you’re thinking about doing an act of public service in the coming 24 hours, I’d urge you to contact the Red Cross.”
