Boy, 2, in critical condition following near-drowning at Whitlam Leisure Centre in Liverpool, Sydney

A toddler is fighting for life following a near drowning at a public swimming pool in southwestern Sydney.

The incident occurred at the Whitlam Leisure Centre in Liverpool about 1.30pm on Sunday.

A two-year-old boy was helped by bystanders before being airlifted to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in a critical condition.

“Officers attached to Liverpool City Police Area Command attended and have commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident,” NSW Police said.

The pool closed on Sunday following the incident but has since reopened.

Centre management shared their well-wishes for the boy on social media.

“Our thoughts are with the young boy who is currently recovering in hospital, his family, as well as the lifeguards, first responders and those present at the time,” they said.
