Police are investigating the death of a woman in southwest Sydney after she was found in the stairwell of a unit complex with severe burns to her body.

Emergency services were called to the residences at Vicliffe Avenue in Campsie just after 3pm on Monday after the 44-year-old woman was found in a stairwell with burns.

She was rushed to Concord Hospital as police commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the mysterious incident.

Police were informed at about 9.30pm that the woman had died in hospital.

She is yet to be formally identified.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

No one else was injured in the incident.
