Police are trying to piece together the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a body on a luxury yacht inside Sydney Harbour.

Emergency services were alerted after receiving a request for a welfare check aboard the boat, which was anchored at Sirius Point, Cremorne Point, on Sydney’s lower north shore.

At around 5.45pm on Sunday, the water police responded to the two-masted vessel before discovering the body of a man, believed to be aged in his 60s, who had not returned home after boarding the boat days earlier.

A fleet of land-based police cars, ambulance crews and a fire rescue truck assembled at the Taronga Zoo Wharf to assist after water police discovered the yacht with its sails furled and wrapped under a blue covering.

The SMH reports the man may have been working on the boat before being overcome by fumes from the engine.

Police continue to investigate and will prepare a report for the Coroner.
