New South Wales Police have charged a man after two elderly people were allegedly assaulted in horrific hammer attacks in Sydney’s south-western suburb of Eastwood.

Officers were called to a Doomben Avenue home about 9pm on Tuesday after receiving calls an elderly man had been struck in the face with a hammer after opening the front door to a stranger.

A 75-year-old man was treated by paramedics at the scene before he was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in stable condition.

One day later in the same suburb, emergency services raced to a park on the corner of Blaxland Road and Doomben Avenue, where a 71-year-old man was found with injuries to his head and face.

First responders determined the man’s head and face were allegedly struck by a hammer multiple times, with paramedics transporting him to Royal North Shore Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Following extensive enquiries, detectives conducted a search warrant at Doomben Avenue unit where they seized a hammer.

A 32-year-old man was then arrested at the property after a struggle with officers.

Police said officers were forced to taser the man after he allegedly resisted arrest and attacked police.

“The man was taken to Gladesville Police Station where he was charged with cause wounding/grievous bodily harm to person with intent to murder, assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm and destroy or damage property less than $2000,” the force said in a statement provided to The Nightly.

He was refused bail and is set to appear before Burwood Local Court on Thursday.
