Emergency crews called to site of Sydney gas explosion after locals report ‘gas smell’ in the area
Emergency crews have returned to the Sydney suburb of Whalan following a deadly explosion on Saturday afternoon, after locals reported they could “smell gas” on Tuesday morning.
NSW Fire and Rescue were on the site by 8am, investigating the cause of the odour.
Gas company, Jemena Energy, and the local council’s Rapid Response Team were also at the scene.

“You can certainly smell that gassy odour in the air right now,” Tapper said.
“The fire crew, they’ve just gone into the scene.
“Jemena Energy, they’re the gas company, they’re here on scene too.
“We have members of the council Rapid Response Team here in Blacktown, on scene too, because no-one wants to take any risks after what happened on Saturday.
“It is obviously going to take quite some time throughout the morning.
“Crews will remain here.”
Tapper said early verbal reports from the response team suggested no gas was being detected.
“In some good news, for now, the residents of Whalan can be put at ease for the time being,” he said.
”No gas has been detected on the official gas readers of fire and rescue at the scene at that unit complex.”
