Police were called to the scene after 11 last night.

An innocent family has escaped injury when several shots were fired into their suburban home in Sydney’s northwest in a case of mistaken identity.

A number of shots were fired into a home on Nangar Cres in North Kellyville about 11pm on Wednesday.

Bullets penetrated windows and shattered glass panels of a balcony.

Three people were home at the time — a 44-year-old man, 48-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man — but were not injured.

It is unbelievable the family members were not hurt, NSW Police Superintendent Naomi Moore said.

They are “incredibly traumatised”, she said.

The shooting was targeted, but the offenders got the wrong house and the wrong family, Moore said.

“(The victims) are rightfully very upset,” she said.

Soon after the shooting, police were then called to reports of a car on fire at Watergum Cl in Rouse Hill — also in Sydney’s northwestern suburbs.

Fire crews managed to put out the blaze, but the vehicle was completely destroyed.

The shooting and the car fire are believed to be linked, and police believe the offenders may have run off through a reserve nearby after setting the car alight.

It is unclear who the intended targets of the shooting were, but Moore said there were homes in the area which “may have had issues in the past”.

When asked if the shooting was gang-related, Moore could not confirm or deny but said: “People don’t drive round shooting at people’s houses unless there’s some element of organised crime.”

“Let me be clear on the fact that violence of this kind in our community is not acceptable,” she said.

“People are entitled to live in their homes, not in fear and these people have been targeted wrongfully and their lives have been turned upside-down overnight.”

NSW Police Taskforce Falcon, which was established in May to investigate and dismantle Sydney’s organised crime networks, has been notified about the incident.

There have been a slew of arsons and public shootings associated with Sydney’s ongoing gang wars since December last year.

Moore said police would not tolerate these types of violent crimes.

“People’s lives are in danger and the police will come for you when you endanger the community,” she said.

Anyone with any information has been urged to contact Castle Hill Police Station or Crime Stoppers.
