A driver has died after crashing into a tree, with the tragic discovery made after paramedics noticed the car behind them had “disappeared”.

The ambulance was travelling on the Far North Coast of NSW on Saturday night, when they noticed an SUV that had been travelling behind them “had disappeared,” NSW Police said on Sunday.

They turned around on Giinagay Wy, at North Macksville, and discovered that the car had crashed, killing the driver about 9.30pm.

“The SUV had left the road and hit a tree,” police said.

The driver, believed to be a 32-year-old local man, was the sole occupant of the car, and died at the scene.

Investigations are ongoing, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
