Travellers trying to return to Sydney on the Labour Day public holiday have been left stranded after a major crash has left lanes closed and traffic banked back for kilometres.

Live Traffic NSW said the incident occurred just after 11am on Monday morning, with two of three southbound lanes of the M1 motorway at Mooney Mooney Creek closed.

The incident is near the turnoff to Gosford on approach to the Mooney Mooney Creek Bridge.

Transport NSW, emergency services and tow trucks are attending the scene with police saying drivers need to exercise caution, prepare to merge and expect long delays.

“There are five cars in the crash and the queue is back about seven kilometres,” a caller to Sydney radio station 2GB said.

“Its taking up two lanes at the Gosford exit, near the reptile park sign.

“Its going to be a mess for quite a long time. That while section is just a mess,” the caller added.
