A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said two people had evacuated the unit themselves.

One of the people became seriously sick and died at the scene despite medical intervention.

The unit was not on fire but was filled with smoke, the spokesman said.

He said food catching fire was a common occurrence seen by firefighters.

Further details of the cooking appliance used have not been confirmed by authorities.
