Mick Mundine: Aboriginal leader charged over alleged historical child sexual assault in Redfern

The prominent Sydney Aboriginal leader has been charged with two offences following an investigation into allegations dating back four decades.

Prominent Indigenous elder and member of the legendary boxing family, Mick Mundine has been arrested over allegations of child sexual assault. The 79-year-old is accused of assaulting a 15-year-old more than 40 years ago.

Prominent Sydney Aboriginal leader Mick Mundine has been charged with two sexual assault offences following an investigation into allegations dating back 40 years.

The 79-year-old chief executive of the Aboriginal Housing Company was arrested by Sex Crimes Squad detectives in Redfern about 7am on Thursday.

NSW Police confirmed a 79-year-old man had been charged with sexual assault – assault and commit act of indecency, and sexual assault of a person under 16 years of age.

The charges relate to allegations involving a girl who was 15 at the time of the alleged offences in June 1986.

Mundine was taken to Newtown Police Station following his arrest, where he was formally charged.

He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday, October 14.

Strike Force Millersburg was established in December 2025 to investigate the alleged historical sexual assaults in Redfern.

“Following extensive inquiries, about 7am today (Thursday 8 October 2026) strike force detectives arrested a 79-year-old man in Redfern,” NSW Police said in a statement.

Mr Mundine has been a longstanding and influential figure in Sydney’s Aboriginal community, particularly through his work advocating for housing and development in Redfern.

As chief executive of the Aboriginal Housing Company, he has overseen major community housing initiatives, including the $70 million Pemulwuy Project, which was completed in 2023.

Mundine is also part of one of Australia’s best-known boxing families.

He is the brother of legendary Australian boxer Tony Mundine, who died in August, and the uncle of former world boxing champion Anthony Mundine.
