Friends and family have rallied to support an Australian mother suffering life-threatening injuries after an accident in Bali raising more than $50,000 in a day for her medical bills.

Samantha Baillie was on her first overseas trip when she was injured on December 27.

While details of the accident have not been disclosed, a fundraiser set up by a friend said she was in a critical condition, and another Australian she was with at the time had died.

The fundraiser was set up on behalf of the Baillie family by friend Savannah-Leigh Homer, who said both she and Samantha’s mother had flown to Bali to be by her hospital bedside.

Homer, based in regional NSW, said Baillie already has significant medical bills and is facing ongoing critical care plus the costs associated with bringing her home.

“We have already paid $6,000 toward her initial hospital care, and we have now been issued a further medical bill of $52,000, with more costs expected,” she wrote.

In an update on Wednesday, Homer said they had stopped donations on the GoFundMe due to it hitting its goal in less than a day.

“The love, generosity and kindness shown over the past 24 hours has been truly overwhelming,” she wrote.

“Every donation, share, message and act of support has helped lift an unimaginable weight during one of the hardest moments of their lives.

“Because of this incredible support, the GoFundMe goal has now been reached and donations have been stopped. What was needed most in this moment has been covered, and that is entirely because of the compassion of so many people.”

In the GoFundMe, Homer said the Bali trip was “meant to be a happy milestone” for Baillie after “recently starting a new chapter of her life”.

She said Baillie “suffered significant injuries throughout her body, including a fractured skull with bleeding on the brain, multiple broken fingers with severe hand injuries, injuries to her pelvis, and extensive injuries to her feet”.

“She is badly injured and facing a long and uncertain recovery,” Homer wrote in the GoFundMe.

“Tragically, the person Sam was travelling with did not survive the accident. There are children involved on both sides of the families.”

Homer said they did not have travel insurance.

She added Baillie is a hairdresser who, due to the severity of her injuries particularly to her hands, “will not be able to work for a long time”.

“How she will manage day to day once she is home is a major concern,” she said, adding a happy holiday had become “the most devastating time of our lives” for the family.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which provides consular assistance to Australians overseas, said it is providing support to the injured woman’s family, and that of the other person who died in Bali.

“We send our deepest condolences to the families at this difficult time,” a spokesperson told 7NEWS.com.au.

“Owing to our privacy obligations we are unable to provide further comment.”
