Human remains found at a beach in NSW belong to a man reported missing late last year, police have confirmed.

A bone was located on the shoreline of Newcastle’s Stockton Beach on the afternoon of Monday, August 26 and reported to authorities.

Forensic tests linked the remains to a 20-year-old man who had gone missing while swimming at the beach on November 26.

At the time, emergency services were called to reports that swimmers were in trouble in the surf.

Three people were rescued however one could not be found and a frantic air and water search was launched to find him.

“Inquiries indicate the death is not suspicious and a report will be prepared for the information of the coroner,” NSW Police said in a statement.
