NSW Education Minister Prue Car has revealed she has been diagnosed with breast cancer and will be taking leave as she battles cancer again.

“I’ve got some news to share with you that’s not so great,” Ms Car said in a video message on social media.

“I have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

“This means that I’m going to have to have a little bit of time off.

“I’m going to have to receive some pretty significant treatment and in that period there’ll be someone acting for me as minister.

Ms Car, who is the member for Londonderry, said she was “confident” about fighting cancer off again.

“I’ve fought this before and I’m really confident that I can fight it again,” she said.

“The prognosis is good, the amazing medical team around me are really hopeful about the prospects after treatment and so am I.”

Ms Car thanked members of NSW Health, who she said have been “amazing”.

“I just want to remind everyone, to all the women out there, just be really vigilant with your checks,” Ms Car said.

“Getting it early, this is what’s happened in my case is so important.

“I know a lot of people have been through this, there’s lots of people in our community that have been affected by cancer, particularly breast cancer and I’ll just be taking this time to get myself well and spend time with my young family.”

NSW Premier Chris Minns shared a message of support for Ms Car and confirmed Courtney Houssos will act as Minister for Education while Ms Car is on leave.

“The thoughts of the entire Government are with our colleague and our friend Prue as she begins treatment following her breast cancer diagnosis,” he wrote on X.

“I have asked Courtney Houssos to act as the Minister for Education and Early Learning and the Minister for Western Sydney until Prue returns. Prue remains as the Deputy Premier of NSW, and we look forward to welcoming her back when she’s ready.”
