A man has been shot dead by police after crashing his car then allegedly brandishing a rifle and pointing it at officers.

A man has been shot dead by police after he allegedly pointed a rifle at officers on the NSW Southern Tablelands.
Police were called to a car crash on Rugby Road, Rugby, about 84km north of Yass, at about 2.50pm on Sunday.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found the driver of the Chrysler station wagon apparently unconscious.

He was then shot at least once by one of the officers, NSW Police said in a statement.
Police tried to perform CPR, but the man could not be saved and died at the scene.
No police were injured during the shooting, and a crime scene has been established.
An independent Professionsal Standards Command and Law Enforcement Conduct Commission will also take place.
Police are expected to give an update later on Monday morning.
