NSW Police has charged a fifth person over riots that erupted outside a church in Sydney’s west after an Assyrian bishop was stabbed during a live-streamed sermon.

A 17-year-old will front children’s court on Wednesday over charges of rioting, destroying or damaging property and possessing an unauthorised pistol outside the Christ The Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley last Monday.

About 2,000 rioters violently clashed with police for hours, pelting officers with projectiles including bricks and fence posts. About 58 officers were injured while 51 police vehicles were damaged.

NSW Police on Tuesday appealed to the public for information about nine men they believe could help with the investigation into the riot.

Strike Force Dribs Commander Superintendent Andrew Evans said the nine men were being targeted by detectives due to the “violent and aggressive nature of their actions”.

“We are doing everything we can to identify these men and are now appealing for public assistance,” he said.

“Someone in the community knows who they are.”
