Tragedy has struck a country northern NSW town after a teenage girl was struck and killed by a car and trailer.

At about 5pm on Wednesday, emergency services were called to the Bruxner Highway, East Lismore, following reports a pedestrian had been hit by a trailer.

Members of the public tried desperately to revive the teenager and administered first aid until NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived.

The 15-year-old girl was taken to Lismore Base Hospital, however she later passed away.

The male driver of the utility and trailer, aged 42, was taken to Lismore Base Hospital for mandatory testing.

Officers attached to Richmond Police District established a crime scene, with ongoing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
