Three students have been taken to hospital with burns when a science experiment went wrong at a NSW high school on Tuesday.

The incident happened in a science laboratory at Brisbane Water Secondary College’s Woy Woy campus on the Central Coast about 9.30am.

One of the three Year 10 students was flown to Royal North Shore Hospital with multiple burns.

The other two students were taken by road to Gosford Hospital and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

7NEWS.com.au has been told one student was well enough to be discharged, another will stay overnight for observation and a third will remain in hospital for further treatment.

‘Deeply concerned’

“We are deeply concerned for the welfare of the students injured during an incident in a science laboratory this morning,” a NSW Department of Education spokesperson said.

“Our thoughts are with the students, their families and friends.

“The safety and wellbeing of students and staff are always our highest priorities and we have offered counselling and support.

“We would also like to acknowledge the swift action of staff who immediately contacted emergency services and applied first aid to affected students.”

The cause of the incident is yet to be officially determined but The Daily Telegraph reports it may have been sparked by an ethanol spill which caught fire.

The science labs were locked down but the rest of the school continued to operate as normal.

The campus told parents there had been a “medical incident” at the school.

“Supports are in place for students and staff and we are still operational,” the school said on Facebook.

“Phones may be down and affected.

“All immediate families affected have already been contacted. Thank you for your patience and understanding at this time.”
