Three young alleged car thieves charged after motorcyclist dies during police chase in northern NSW

Three teenage boys have now been charged over the death of a motorcyclist in northern NSW on Tuesday.

The innocent motorcyclist was hit during a police chase involving an allegedly stolen ute about 7.15am.

An Isuzu ute was reported stolen from a home in Moree early on Monday morning, before Highway Patrol officers spotted it on Oxley Hwy at Carroll and tried to stop it.

“The Isuzu failed to stop, and a pursuit was initiated travelling towards Gunnedah,” police said.

The chase led to the Kamilaroi Hwy, where the ute allegedly crashed with a motorcycle.

The motorcyclist was critically injured, with paramedics treating him for life-threatening injuries.

“He was unable to be revived and died at the scene,” police said.

“The man has not been formally identified.”

The ute sped off through Gunnedah, back onto the Oxley Hwy, before more police were called in and a second pursuit began.

The car lost control and crashed, with three youths seen fleeing the scene.

A crime scene investigation was established, and the highway was closed in both directions. It was reopened for all traffic by 6.10pm.

Critical incident teams are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, which will also be subject to an independent review.

Charges laid

Three male youths, all aged 14, were arrested and taken to Tamworth Police Station, according to police.

The boy who police will allege was the driver of the car was charged with 15 offences including aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death, speeding, failing to stop during a police pursuit, failing to stop after an impact, taking and driving a vehicle without consent, and aggravated break and enter.

The other two boys were each charged with five offences each including taking and driving a vehicle without the owner’s consent, being in a vehicle without consent, and aggravated break and enter.

All three were refused bail to appear in a children’s court on Wednesday.
