A man has been charged with murder after a woman was found dead at a caravan park in north-west NSW.

NSW Police officers responded to a concern for welfare report following a “commotion in a tent” at the park on Henry Street in Gunnedah on Friday morning.

“On arrival, police were confronted by a male person with an amount of blood on him,” Chief Inspector Michael Wurth told reporters.

Attending officers then discovered a woman “seriously injured” in a nearby tent and commenced CPR until paramedics arrived.

Despite their efforts, the woman - who is yet to be formally identified but is believed to be in her 50s - died at the scene.

A 29-year-old man was arrested nearby and taken to Gunnedah Police Station. He was later charged with murder (DV) and refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court on Saturday.

A knife was also seized.

“It was a traumatic scene... we know these (scenes) are traumatic and they can have an accumulative effect... we’re providing support to those (responding officers) ... family and witnesses,” Wurth said.

Police say the pair - both Gunnedah residents - were known to one another but would not reveal the nature of their relationship.

A report will be prepared with the coroner.
