Caboolture man Gavin Rolls, 47, has been charged with the alleged murder of his stepfather, Michael Hegerty, 60, last Sunday.

Hegerty owned the caravan parked at National Storage, and the two men had allegedly been arguing over it for some time, 7NEWS understands. Rolls, who makes money selling second-hand goods, had listed the caravan for sale last month.

Queensland Police Detective Inspector David Harbison said the alleged dispute occurred “over something trivial, we believe”.

“We know that both the men were in that facility earlier on Sunday morning,” Harbison said.

Shortly after 10am, when police allege Rolls killed Hegerty, Rolls fled Queensland, and drove to Ballina, in northern NSW.

Hegerty’s partner called police when Hegerty failed to return home — she went to the storage facility to check on him and discovered him dead inside the caravan.

Police tracked down Rolls in a Ballina motel on Thursday morning.

He was arrested and charged with murder (DV), and first appeared in Ballina Local Court that day for extradition proceedings.

Rolls was then brought back to the Pine Rivers Watch House in Queensland.

He faced his murder charge at Caboolture Magistrates Court on Friday.
