A 24-year-old man was arrested in Coffs Harbour about 4.20pm on Thursday and charged with murder.

He was refused bail to appear at Coffs Harbour Local Court on Friday.

At the time of the attack, Detective Chief Inspector Guy Flaherty said police were probing whether there was an altercation that ended in the stabbing.

“We believe from the investigations so far and the canvasses done by detectives that the parties were known to each other,” he said last week.

“Police are canvassing residents and we’ve conducted a number of crime scene warrants on two different locations.”

Locals said they had heard arguing in the early hours before the attack.

“I heard these people arguing out the front of my house walking past,” one woman told 7NEWS.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers.
