Worrigee: Man arrested over terrifying alleged axe attack, car-jacking in Nowra

A man has been arrested after a terrifying alleged axe rampage and car-jacking that left a woman in hospital with multiple injuries.
Police were called to Rayleigh Drive in the Nowra suburb of Worrigee about 1pm on Saturday after reports of a man in the area brandishing an axe and hammer.
It is alleged the man threw the axe at officers’ vehicle before he retrieved the weapon and ran to nearby Illawarra Circuit, where a 66-year-old woman was sitting in her Ford Mustang.

With the help of PolAir, the vehicle was located heading south on Princes Highway about 2pm, sparking a police pursuit after the driver allegedly failed to stop when directed.
“The pursuit continued through Nowra, Bomaderry, Berry, Gerringong, and Kiama during which the sports allegedly reached speeds of 180km/h in an 80km/h speed zone, a police statement read.
“During the pursuit, officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command attempted to utilise road spikes to stop the driver; however, the driver allegedly swerved the vehicle towards a highway patrol officer narrowly missing him and the spikes.
“The pursuit ended after the sports car was seen driving on the opposite side of the Princes Highway at Kiama Downs, where it collided with a utility before stopping.”
Police say the driver attempted to run away but members of the public held him until officers arrived.
Paramedics treated the woman for multiple leg and torso injuries before she was taken to Shoalhaven Memorial Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
She has since been transferred to St George Hospital for further treatment.
The driver of the ute involved in the crash was to Wollongong Hospital for assessment.
The 25-year-old man accused of the attack and carjacking is in Wollongong Hospital under police guard.
