A group of up to five people have carried out a frenzied attack, allegedly stabbing a man sitting in a car in southwestern Sydney on Tuesday morning.

Police have launched an investigation after the man was reportedly set upon by the group and stabbed in a carpark in Merrylands.

Emergency services were called to the carpark on Burnett Street, Merrylands, about 1.50am, following reports of an assault.

Officers attached to Cumberland police area command arrived and were told a 23-year-old man was sitting in his car when he was approached by three to five people and stabbed.

The group left the scene and he called for assistance.

The man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for injuries to his hand, shoulder, chest and thigh, before being taken to Westmead Hospital. Police have been told his injuries are not life-threatening.

A crime scene has been established with police now investigating the incident.
