A man has been hunted by police dogs in NT bushland after allegedly seriously assaulting a woman last week.

Police say a woman in her 40s was the victim of a domestic assault in Parap, Darwin on October 1.

The woman was seriously assaulted by a man about midnight, before a witness managed to intervene.

He ran from the scene and the woman was rushed to hospital with head lacerations and a punctured lung.

Police had been actively hunting for the man who had been evading authorities since the incident.

On Tuesday they received information that the man was hiding in bushland in Yarrawonga, and the dog squad was sent to investigate.

The man was found but police said he attempted to run away through the bush.

When confronted by a dog and its handler he surrendered “without incident”.

The 49-year-old has since been charged with unlawfully causing serious harm, engaging in conduct that contravenes a Domestic Violence Order and going armed in public.

“This is a prime example of how proactive policing and collaboration between units can quickly resolve serious incidents, ensuring the safety of our community,” Detective Senior Sergeant Andrew Kren said.

The man has been remanded to appear in Darwin Local Court on Wednesday.

Police are continuing to investigate what happened and anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information has been urged to come forward.
