Woman arrested for attacking son after he tried to stop her drink driving in Belconnen, ACT

Local residents have intervened after a woman attacked her child as he tried to restrain her from driving under the influence.

The 47-year-old woman will face the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday after allegedly assaulting police and the child during a family violence incident around 7pm Sunday.

The woman got into a verbal argument with her son at a home in Belconnen after drinking alcohol.

She is reported to have then attempted to leave the residence by getting in a car but was stopped by the child who was concerned about her intoxicated state.

Neighbours who witnessed the incident also attempted to intervene and during the altercation, the woman allegedly assaulted the boy, allegedly biting, hitting and scratching him.

Police arrived a short time later and spoke to the woman and her son.

Due to her increasingly violent behaviour, officers attempted to place her under arrest but she resisted, throwing a punch and kicking at one officer.

Officers eventually arrested the woman and she was charged with assaulting a frontline community service provider, attempting to resist a public official, and aggravated assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
