A motorbike rider who tried to evade police has died after crashing on the NSW south coast.

A critical incident investigation has been declared after the rider died following a police pursuit.

At about 3.35pm on Sunday, police were patrolling the Jamberoo area when they attempted to stop the motorcycle rider for a random breath test.

Officers attached to the Lake Illawarra police district directed the rider to stop, however, a pursuit was initiated when he allegedly failed to do so.

The pursuit was then terminated a short time later due to safety concerns.

Shortly after the pursuit was terminated police located the crashed motorcycle on Jamberoo Road.

Police immediately commenced first aid on the rider before NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived, however, the male rider died at the scene.

He is yet to be formally identified.

A critical incident team from Wollongong Police District will investigate the incident’s circumstances. The investigation will also be subject to an independent review. Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000.
