A man is fighting for his life after being shot by police in Townsville.

Queensland Police was called just before 4.30pm on Tuesday when a man in his 20s allegedly started making threats while armed with a knife at a Lillipilli Street residence in Vincent.

He was located inside the house and allegedly confronted police.

A police spokesperson says responding officers gave multiple warnings but as the man continued to advance on them, he was shot.

Medical assistance was immediately rendered and he was taken to the Townsville University Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

No one else was physically injured during the incident.

A crime scene has been declared and an investigation is ongoing.

The matter is under investigation by the Ethical Standards Command, with oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
