Residents have been told to stay indoors as police search for the occupants of a vehicle that crashed near a major highway in Central Queensland.

Police issued an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) and have initiated a major search responding to an “ongoing” incident near the Bruce Highway at Canoona.

The PSPA was declared at 1.42pm after a vehicle reportedly crashed near the Canoona Speed Farm, before the fled on foot and are believed to be hiding in the area.

Police reports state that the search boundaries encompass a two-kilometre radius of where the incident occurred on Kunwarara Road (Bruce Highway), north of Raspberry Creek Road.

Residents close to the crash scene have been urged to remain indoors and the public are advised to avoid the area.
