The Tableland Veterinary Service (TVS) confirmed his “tragic and untimely” death on Monday.

“John was a natural as a veterinarian - clever, intuitive but most of all, affable and charming. He related to people from all walks of life but was always most at home with cattle and horses,” TVS wrote.

“He will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him. Our love and support goes out to all his family and friends at this difficult time.”

TVS said Hosie enrolled in Veterinary Science at James Cook University in 2005, graduating in 2010 before moving to Gympie Veterinary Service.

He went on to become the first JCU graduate to be recognised as a Member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in the Reproductive Medicine chapter and also became a partner in TVS as his dad, Ian, transitioned to retirement.

“To no one’s surprise, John also worked towards his pilot license and was at his happiest flying around North Queensland’s cattle stations pregnancy testing, bull testing, and soaking up station life,” it said.

Hosie moved west to Yan Yean cattle station near Richmond in 2020 before marrying his wife, Dr Michaela - also a JCU graduate and TVS vet - in 2021 and the pair welcomed a baby boy, Hayes, in 2023.

A memorial for Hosie will be held in Townsville on Friday.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
