Two cars appear to have been driving dangerously before a crash on the Bruce Highway at Palmview on the Sunshine Coast.

The moment a tailgater gets brake-checked, causing a multi-vehicle crash on a Queensland highway, has been caught on camera.

The 20-year-old man was tailgating a Subaru Outback wagon with his Mazda 3 hatchback while they travelled northbound on the Bruce Hwy on the Sunshine Coast about 2.30pm on Wednesday.

A camera on a truck in the next lane over filmed the Mazda less than a metre away from the rear of the Subaru.

The footage shows the Subaru driver brake-checking — or braking suddenly and momentarily while being tailgated — twice.

The second brake-check causes the Mazda to veer across lanes, in front of the truck, before fishtailing and crashing into the truck and at least one other vehicle — another truck.

The Mazda driver escaped injury.

The Subaru avoided the wreckage and the driver continued to drive away from the crash.

Police are yet to file any charges, calling on any witnesses to come forward while they continue an investigation.
