A Gold Coast bus driver has caused a stir by stopping mid-shift to get a coffee while passengers on board waited.

A Gold Coast bus driver has divided opinions about keeping passengers waiting while he stopped to get coffee.

Hundreds of people commented on 7NEWS Gold Coast social media pages about the driver’s actions, including many who supported his decision to get a caffeine hit while getting people safely to their destinations.

An annoyed passenger who supplied the footage to 7NEWS claimed it took 10 minutes for the driver to emerge from the Southport cafe with his takeaway order.

Mayor Tom Tate was among those who sympathised with the waiting passengers.

“Make some coffee at home and have it available so you don’t inconvenience your passengers,” he said.

“It’s about service. It’s the ultimate rudeness, really.”

However, some people praised the man for trying to stave off fatigue.

“He was probably exhausted and needed it to keep him going,” one person wrote on the 7NEWS Gold Coast Facebook page.

“Bus drivers are humans as well.”

Another wrote on Instagram: “What if he was really tired and it was better to get a coffee than crash?”

Kinetic, the company providing public bus services on the Gold Coast, told 7NEWS it is looking into the incident.

It also said drivers are allocated breaks during their shifts.
