Gold Coast stabbing: Mother Yingying Xu posted on TikTok hours before daughter Sophie Wang’s throat slashed

The Nightly
A warning - the details of this story are terribly confronting.

The Gold Coast mother who police allege murdered her ten-year-old daughter Sophie Wang, after slashing her throat, took to the social media platform TikTok and posted several videos in the hours leading up to the incident.

As residents in the Carrara area come to terms with the horrific circumstances surrounding the child’s death at her home, police have confirmed that the victim’s mother, 46-year-old YingYing Xu posted a series of videos that will become a part of their investigation, the Courier Mail reports.

In one video, a user calling herself uxyingemily said she recently felt that “the devil Satan has been telling me that he has been influencing … interfering with my soul”.

“Then he will take 100 per cent captive, occupy my soul and go to the end of times,” Xu said.

Sophie Wang was found dead by her father at 6pm when he returned home with neighbours describing hearing the “haunting” cries of Dr Yun Wang, an Associate Professor in chemistry and forensic science at Griffith University, when he discovered his daughter.

YingYing Xu was found four hours later, wandering in a nearby street and was taken into custody by police.

Ms Xu did not appear in person when her matter was mentioned in Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday and was remanded in custody to appear again on November 29.

Sophie was a beloved Year 5 student at the prestigious Emmanuel College.

In a letter to parents on Wednesday, college principal Dan Brown confirmed the distressing news of Sophie’s death.

“It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of a tragic incident that occurred in a home within Emerald Lakes last night, resulting in the passing of one of our beloved students,” the Courier Mail reports.

“We are devastated by this incident and know it will profoundly impact our school community.

“Our prayers go out to the family and friends of the child, and we extend our deepest condolences to all those affected by this tragedy.”

Mr Brown said counselling staff would be available to support grieving students.

“Our priority is the wellbeing of our students and staff, and we will do everything possible to help our community over the coming days,” he said.

“Please be assured we are here for all in our community — students, staff and parents — and these support services are available to anyone in need.

“While words cannot ease the shock and pain of such a tragic loss, please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all.”

Detective Acting Inspector Kent Ellis said authorities conducted an efficient investigation under challenging circumstances, which led to the 46-year-old mother’s arrest.

“The scene was incredibly confronting and our attending members, both QPS and paramedics will be receiving the necessary support,” he told reporters on Wednesday.

“In my 15-year career as a detective, it’s one of the most confronting scenes I have seen.”

Officers and the paramedics who attended the scene have been offered counselling.

Neighbour Chris Sydes told 7NEWS he did not know the family well, but said Sophie appeared to be “chirpy”, “happy” and “outgoing”.

“This is a quiet little street, probably one of the best streets in Carrara,” he said.

“Six o’clock last night, all the police cars just started to show up.

“That was the first we knew something was wrong, then all the ambulances.

“The news that we got not long afterwards was heartbreaking.

“A little girl — I’ve seen her come home from school. It’s heartbreaking. No child, nobody deserves that.”
