A learner driver is in a critical condition after losing control of his vehicle and crashing down an embankment at Peregian Springs. The road was closed for several hours as crews worked to free him from the car.

A young man has died after his car plunged off the side of the road in wet conditions on the Sunshine Coast, with an investigation now underway.

The 20-year-old Sippy Downs man was travelling north on the Sunshine Motorway in Peregian Springs in a silver Mitsubishi Triton when the vehicle lost control due to the slippery conditions on Thursday.

The car veered off Emu Mountain Rd after passing through the roundabout at Murdering Creek Rd, crashing into a tree about 5.20pm.

Fire crews used a hydraulic rescue tool, also known as the jaws of life, to free the driver, who was then transported to Sunshine Coast University Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

He later died as a result of his injuries.

The passenger, a 56-year-old man from Cooroibah, was uninjured.

“[This] is actually due to the storm that came through, and water over the road. The car sustained [a] fairly heavy impact,” said Queensland Fire Department inspector Jason Evans.

Investigators are appealing for witnesses or anyone with relevant dashcam footage to come forward as the investigation continues.

With storms expected to continue across parts of Queensland this weekend, drivers are advised to exercise caution on the roads.
