Two people have been killed, and another is fighting for life after a major crash involving two cars on the Bruce Highway south of Cairns.

The two cars crashed on the Bruce Hwy northbound at Fitzgerald Creek about 11.30am on Friday.

Paramedics assessed three people with life-threatening injuries, according to a Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson, however only one was taken to hospital.

A man with critical injuries to his chest and abdomen was airlifted to Cairns Hospital.

Queensland Police confirmed the other two people were declared dead at the scene.

Motorists were told to avoid the area or use an alternative route.

The Bruce Highway has been closed northbound and diversions are in place.
