Police investigating after rock thrown through train window injures five-year-old

A young boy has been seriously injured after he was hit by a rock thrown through a train window in the state’s north.

The five-year-old boy was travelling on a train in Cairns when the rock smashed through a window, striking him in the head just after 4pm on Saturday.

The boy was taken to Cairns Hospital with serious injuries and is expected to be transported to Townsville Hospital for further treatment on Sunday.

A police spokesperson said the rock is believed to have been thrown near the James and Law st intersection in Cairns north.

“Police are appealing for witnesses, particularly anyone with relevant vision, to come forward,” the spokesperson said.

Investigations are continuing.
