Thousands of people were evacuated from a Queensland airport on Monday following a security breach.

Flights to and from Cairns Airport have now resumed, following the breach at the domestic terminal just after midday.

The airport was evacuated, and flights were delayed or cancelled, after a passenger went into the Departures Lounge without undergoing required screening.

The evacuation was standard procedure and there was no immediate risk to customers, a Cairns Airport spokesperson said.

“It is standard procedure and in line with Cairns Airport’s legislated security requirements to rescreen all persons in the Departures Lounge following an occurrence such as this,” the spokesperson said.

“This process was conducted as quickly as possible and we appreciate our customers’ patience and understanding.”
