Police said both men were 65 years old and from Kingscote.

Kangaroo Island Mayor Michael Pengilly said the men were experienced fishermen who caught whiting for a living.

“It’s a sad feeling across the island today … all we can do is assist those families as much as possible,” Pengilly said.

“The guy driving the boat knows those waters like the back of his hand ... so it’s just something that’s gone terribly wrong and the outcome tragic.”
