Police are searching for those involved in a suspected ambush after a man turned up at a southwest Sydney hospital with gunshot and stab wounds.

The 30-year-old arrived at Bankstown Hospital late on Tuesday suffering gunshot wounds to his abdomen and hand, along with a stab wound to his shoulder.

He was later transferred to another facility.

Police responded to reports of shots fired on Kentucky Rd in Riverwood about 10pm, where they established a crime scene.

Not long after, investigators were told a man had presented himself to hospital with multiple injuries.

Detectives from Campsie Police Area Command were still waiting to interview the injured man on Wednesday morning.

“Emergency services were called to Bankstown Hospital just after 10pm yesterday after a 30-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen and hand, and a stab wound to his shoulder,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“The man was assessed before being transferred to a different hospital for further treatment. At that time he was reported to be in a serious condition.

“Following inquiries, officers attached to Campsie Police Area Command established a crime scene on Kentucky Road, Riverwood.

“Detectives are now waiting to speak with the man once he is well enough, to determine how he came to be injured.”

Police believe at least two offenders may have been involved and remain on the run.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Campsie Police or Crime Stoppers. Police also want to speak with anyone who was near Kentucky Rd around 10pm and may have seen suspicious activity or captured dashcam footage.

Police are expected to front the media at 10am in Sydney, after a “public place shooting”.
