A spokesperson from the Metropolitan Fire Service told the ABC the teenager was swept out, and attempts by other swimmers to assist were eventually abandoned.

One man at the scene who heard a woman crying and yelling told 7NEWS: “No one had any idea what was happening, but something is not right ... we are praying.”

A multi-agency search involving PolAir and local surf lifesaving and search and rescue teams was coordinated that afternoon, but has so far been unsuccessful.

“Unfortunately, the teen has not been located,” SA Police said.

“The search effort is being hampered by dangerous weather conditions in the area.”

SA Police Superintendent Joanne Howard said: “We would like to thank the local community and emergency services for their assistance with the search.

“We will continue to search with the assistance of local emergency services and other resources (on Monday).”

Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
