7NEWS meteorologist reveals latest outlook for Christmas day.

Sydney is set to swelter on Tuesday as the mercury soars to 33C in the city, with large parts of the western suburbs expected to peak above 40C.

But there could be a cool change on the way for Christmas Day across large parts of Australia, Channel 7 meteorologist Tony Auden told Sunrise.

Auden said the capital cities could expect it to be “not too hot” with “relatively settled” conditions.

“Cooler around Brisbane and Sydney, cooler around Melbourne, mid-20s, bucket of showers around Hobart, mostly sunny and not too hot in Adelaide,” he said.

“Perth, probably likely very hot on Christmas Eve and cooling back to 30C on Christmas Day. All systems go for big Christmas lunch and afternoon backyard cricket.”

The forecast came as vastly different conditions gripped the east coast on Tuesday, with sweltering temperatures in Sydney and rainy conditions in Brisbane.

Reporting from Penrith, Liam Tapper said the area was bracing with temperatures expected to top 42C.

“It is already 99 per cent humidity out here in Penrith. But I want to take you out to have a quick look at the Nepean River. Look at that, it is absolutely glass.

“I tell you what, that is all about to change. By lunchtime we are going to have 42C here at the foot of the mountains.

“It is going to be the same in Richmond, 42C there. Places like Fairfield, Bankstown, you can expect 40C and still 99 per cent humidity which means that it is going to be an absolute stinker.

“’Ominous’ is the word that experts are using today.

“The message, it is pretty clear — stay hydrated ... and try to stay indoors as much as you can because it is unseasonably hot for this time of December.”

Meanwhile, Queensland reporter Georgie Chumbley spoke about heavy rain and flash flooding in Brisbane.

“Seqwater actually issued a critical severity alert overnight with flood releases being undertaken from North Pine Dam starting at midnight because there was such a deluge.

“You can see that here at the park where we are at Bracken Ridge this morning.

“The water has begun to slowly recede since we have been here but it goes to show how quickly the water rises and then falls back.

“We know there were 70mm recorded at Kallangur, 86mm at Lawnton ... and the SES were kept busy with around 80 calls for help right across the state.”

Chumbley went on to warn drivers not to travel through floodwaters.

“We know one man in Griffin had to be rescued and there is more rain on the way for Brisbane and Southeast Queensland, so certainly a message to keep at the forefront of your mind — if it is flooded, forget it,” she said.
