Specialist paramedics have raced to Mount Compass, south of Adelaide, after a young child was left fighting for life in a fall.

Authorities have not said exactly how the incident unfolded, but it triggered frantic calls to triple-0 about 3pm on Wednesday.

The child is believed to be aged under one and was in a pram at the time they were hurt, The Advertiser reports.

Paramedics rushed to the scene where it quickly became obvious they were dealing with a major emergency.

It is understood the child had suffered critical injuries.

They were stabilised before a MedStar helicopter transported them and a distraught relative to the Royal Adelaide.

The patient is now in the hands of doctors at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
