Rough waters hampered desperate efforts by his wife Kimberley Fuller, 38, and locals to reach the father of two.

Vennix was unconscious when waves pushed him back to shore and he was given CPR.

He was then taken to hospital, where he was declared dead.

Vennix and Fuller, from Birkenhead in Adelaide’s northwest, married earlier this month and had excitedly shared news of their wedding on social media barely a week ago, on December 21.

In a tribute to her husband on Tuesday, Fuller posted a photo of the couple holding hands.

“I took this photo during the last night I had with him,” she said.

“He was the most beautiful human, partner and father.

“All he wanted was to marry me and love and look after me and the boys.

“I will make sure the boys know what an angel he was. Now an angel in heaven. I love you my darling. I’m so sorry.”

Commenting on the tragedy, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also offered his condolences.

“This is such deeply sad news. Our thoughts are with Jacob’s wife, family and friends,” he said.

Bali authorities said the newlyweds had been at the beach for some time before Vennix was caught in a current.

“Two hours after arriving at the tidal beach they then swam, but at that time the waves were quite big, at that time the victim was dragged away,” a local police chief said.

One local said he tried to reach Vennix in a canoe, but it was too dangerous.

“If I went to the middle of the waves, I would definitely be swept away by the waves and it was very risky,” he said.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says it is helping Fuller make the agonising journey home.
