A Qantas passenger flight bound for Adelaide was diverted to a South Australian army base on Thursday due to powerful winds.

QF691, which left Melbourne shortly after 5pm, was forced to make an unscheduled landing at Edinburgh RAAF Base as gusts in the region reached 72km/h.

“One of our flights from Melbourne to Adelaide has diverted to RAAF Base Edinburgh due to adverse weather on approach,” a Qantas spokesperson told The Nightly.

The Boeing 737 was refuelled on the tarmac before continuing its journey to Adelaide.

Qantas said it understood how “frustrating” the unexpected stop was for passengers.

The aircraft landed safely at Adelaide Airport at 8.10pm.

It comes as almost 6000 South Australians are without power as the state grapples with extreme heat.
