A police helicopter has tracked an allegedly stolen car through Adelaide’s northern suburbs before it crashed about midnight and a group of teenagers were arrested.

The Subaru was allegedly filled with petrol but driven away without paying from a service station on Main North Rd in Smithfield at 11.20pm on Thursday.

Police said the car had been taken from a property in Craigmore on Tuesday.

A search began for the car, with the police helicopter spotting it in Elizabeth Downs about 10 minutes later.

The helicopter tracked the vehicle through Smithfield, Blakeview and Craigmore before the joyride finally came to an end at midnight when it crashed at the intersection of Craigmore Rd and Adams Rd in Craigmore.

Officers swooped in and arrested six people, including a 15-year-old boy from Craigmore who police allege was the driver.

The alleged passengers were a 16-year-old boy also from Craigmore, 13-year-old Windsor Gardens boy, 16-year-old Blakeview boy, 16-year-old Elizabeth Downs boy and a 17-year-old Elizabeth Vale boy.

They have all been charged with illegal use of motor vehicle.

The driver was further charged with breach of bail and driving a vehicle unauthorised.

All six teenagers were bailed to appear in the Elizabeth Youth Court on February 28.
